Working with TRAILS

Find out how to work with TRAILS data

Are you a researcher* who would like to use TRAILS-data in your work, but you do not belong to the TRAILS-consortium? Here you can read about the steps you need to take. Information about the TRAILS data can be found elsewhere

A contribution of € 2.500** is requested from external users (for non-commercial purposes only) as a contribution to the TRAILS infrastructure. This fee does not apply if a TRAILS participant is the last author.

  1. First, read and accept the 'General conditions for the access to TRAILS data by external users' (see Downloads). These apply to the data request, as well as to the drafting and publishing of the manuscript and to handling the data.
  2. Prepare your publication plan
    1. For the specification of the variables, please use the codebooks, access to which can be requested here.
  3. Send the plan to the scientific coordinator s.h.booij@umcg.nl and the secretary of TRAILS (z.a.z.usmany@umcg.nl). If the plan is completed correctly, it will be handled in the next biweekly management team meeting. See the general conditions for the conditions for approval.
  4. Once approved,
    1. a data transfer agreement will be drafted and signed by both parties, and if applicable, a handling fee needs to be transferred
    2. a TRAILS contact person with expertise in the area of research will be assigned to you to answer any questions and ease the process
    3. the data will be transferred and you can start working with the TRAILS-data.

* Please note that publication plans can only be submitted by researchers holding a PhD. For (PhD) students who want work with the data, their request must be submitted by a senior researcher.

** In exceptional cases, the contribution may be waived.
